Google is way bigger than you realize

Did you ever wonder why Facebook was so damn slow and Google was so fast? There are reasons. Lots of them...

  1. Buddy of mine told me: "Every one of those million servers eats up power and kills trees. You Google guys are destroying the world!!!"

    Although I know he said it in a good-natured way, I couldn't help but take the bait. Two points:

    1. I reject the notion that energy consumed in data centers is a bad thing. (I did feel this way before I took my present job, by the way.) While some data center power use is new consumption (stuff we didn't do before: Facebook, YouTube, etc.), I think that more of it displaces higher energy consumption activities. For example, we comparison shop online rather than drive from store to store. We send e-mail rather than write letters that have to be flown and trucked across the country.
