You Shall Not Pass!
Love this video! Poor dogs. Cats suck. :(
You Shall Not Pass, Dog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7znI_Kpzbs
By the way...
People see videos like this and think that a cat could actually take a dog in a fight. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, some dogs are afraid of cats. Yes, some dogs don't want to get scratched. But in a fight, take the dog. I have known a number of dogs who are NOT intimidated by cats. In fact, I saw one of my childhood dogs kill a cat rather easily.
Another time, I saw another of my childhood dogs, one of my dad's dogs, attempt to eat a cat--until I stepped in and stopped him. In that case the dog went in after a cat who was hiding under a bench against a wall. The cat must have scratched him because he pulled back out. Then he said this: "Wait a minute, I don't care if I get scratched. Actually, I don't care if the cat gouges my eye out. I am eating that cat." He dove in under the bench and went after the cat. The cat scrambled up the wall behind the bench onto a window sill. At which time the dog (Numnuts was his name, by the way) simply reached over, grabbed the midsection cat in his mouth, leaned his head back to get the cat back into his jaws, and was about to cut the cat in half. Fortunately I pushed Numnuts' skin into his jaw to prevent him from biting down, thus freeing the cat.
The story does have a happy ending. The cat was very friendly, not aloof like some cats are, and even killed a mouse in his brief week-long stay at my dad's house (someone had abandoned her there, on my dad's porch). Numnuts kept trying to eat the cat all week; he was very confused as to why he was not allowed to eat her. I brought the cat to my mother's house, where she lived the rest of her 15+ years.

Stray Dogs, Smarter than Urban Planners?
Love this story, from ABC News:
"Stray Dogs Master Complex Moscow Subway System" by Alex Marquardt, Bill Blakemore, and Ross Eichenholz
I love the fact that dogs are able to master this aspect of life in a big city. Good for them!
But there's more.
Did you catch how they have a statue dedicated to a stray in Mendeleyevskaya station? "It commemorates Malchik, a stray who lived there until he was stabbed by a fashion model in 2002 who didn't like how Malchik barked at her terrier." Looks like fashion models and terriers are the same all over the world.
I also love how even dogs are smarter than politicians and urban planners who want to pack everybody into high density housing. It's not for everybody, or even for every dog!

Zurich!
My business in Switzerland took me to Lenzburg, so I wasn't sure I'd get a chance to see Zurich. As it turns out, my return flight was on Thursday morning so they suggested I stay at a hotel near the airport Wednesday night. They put me on a train from Lenzburg to the airport (with a stop at Zurich HB--Zürich Hauptbahnhof, the main train station: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z%C3%BCrich_Hauptbahnhof), where I would catch a shuttle to the hotel. I thought I wouldn't have time to see Zurich...
But I found myself at the hotel by 6:45 or so, with time on my hands. Turns out that the trains in Switzerland are very easy to figure out, even for a foreigner who can't speak German. They also run right on time, no delays that I could see. So I shuttled back to the airport and took a train back to downtown Zurich. Here are a few of the pictures I took, all from April 10, 2013.

St. Peter Church.
Fraumunster Abbey.
Looking south, over Lake Zurich, from Qualbrucke bridge, towards the Alps. Cell phone camera doesn't do this shot justice. The view of the Alps was STUNNING. Picture taken from here:

One of the steep, narrow streets in old Zurich, on the east side of the river.
I love beagles. Even stuffed Swiss beagles, apparently. Especially if they have a Swiss blanket on them!
Berner Teller for dinner. Beef, sausage, ham, sauerkraut, and potatoes. Delicious!

The Beagles!
All the political stuff I've been posting on this blog has been making me sad. Frustrating to see how people abandon core beliefs to support scum, for no reasons that I can discern. Not to mention that the Packers lost. I mean, did they really think they could win without playing any defense at all, the whole year?
So, here's something that should cheer anyone up. THE BEAGLES! This cracks me up. I should have thought of this.
"The Beagles"

This next part of the post I shouldn't have to do. But since I'm getting old, I fear that I must. Do you know WHY that picture of the Beagles is funny? I mean, it's not just because of the beagles themselves (as cute as they are!).
If you don't know why it's funny, check out some of these images:

Send in the Dogs!
We need more dogs! I happen to work in a place where people can bring their dogs to work. I think it is very cool. I love having the dogs around.

Nothing says "wake up" like a beagle
Yet another beagle story, part of my series of posts about dogs...
Did you know you can use beagles as alarm clocks? Say it with me: YES WE CAN!
My brother and I did, when we were a lot younger. Here's how it works. When you need to wake up a heavy sleeper, you just toss the family beagle onto the sleeping person from about 20 feet away. It's really that simple.
The key is the landing. When the beagle lands, he will not land gracefully like a cat. He will scramble for footing, clawing the sleeping person (who will awaken instantly, needless to say).
P.S. I can't believe I found such a great picture for this post! I have no idea who the guy in the picture is, but it appears that my brother and I are not the only ones to have discovered this technique.

Another Beagle Story
As you know from my past posts about dogs, I love Beagles. Here's another great story, about a beagle making a six-week, 80 km (it's Canada, eh) journey to make it back to his family. GO LASER!

Dogbert is ... a beagle!
I knew it! I just read in Seven Years of Highly Defective People, by Scott Adams, that Dogbert is based on a real beagle. And you know how much I love beagles (Beagles Rock, May 23, 2010).
Wikipedia page, scroll down to the "Trivia" section:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogbert
"In Seven Years of Highly Defective People, Adams says that Dogbert was a combination of Lucy, a beagle owned by his family when he was a child, and the dark side of his own personality, which he describes as the part that 'wants to take over the world and make all the people [his] personal servants'."
I don't know why this makes me happy. But it does.

Beagles Rock
Have you seen the latest Chik-Fil-A commercial? The "Sownd the Alarm Spicee Chikin" commercial? If not, go here...
http://www.chick-fil-a.com/?#thecows
...then choose the "TV Commershals" link, and the cartoon I just mentioned.
Or find it on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74aC8arWT8k
You're probably wondering what the heck this has to do with Beagles. Pay close attention about half way through the commercial, around the 0:16 mark. Watch and listen to the howling beagle. It's priceless. It makes the whole commercial. And it reminded me of beagles.
Not sure what it is, but I love beagles. My family has had several great ones through the years. My mother had a dog, officially named Daisy (she picks some strange names for pets), but unofficially, and much more commonly, known as Beags. Beags was smart and, like most beagles, had a great nose. I still remember that day when she when she lifted her head, took a long sniff, and said to me, "There's something going on in L.A., isn't there." That was during the riots after the Rodney King beating. And we were in Milwaukee at the time! Like I said, smart dog.
Question: What is cuter, a baby beagle or a baby human? Be honest!
