Song of the Day: The Weepies - Jolene

Here's a great old song from a band that I love.  I hadn't heard it before, but I love the sad yet upbeat vibe.  I can't get enough of it.
All of these clouds will disappear
Like we were never here
But I swear there was a time I thought that it would never stop
And now I only think about you if it's raining or it's not
The Weepies - Jolene

Full lyrics from AZLyrics.com:

"Jolene"

It always rained around you
We tried to go inside and it would rain there too
It came pouring through the roof when we traveled underground
Whiskey, water, and tears 'til I thought that we would drown

Jolene, Jolene
Is it still raining everywhere you are?

We didn't hide from it at all
No we just let it fall
In the morning she was gone and everything was dry
The city streets were crowded and I felt like I would die

Now there's sunshine and flowers everywhere
And I don't care

All of these clouds will disappear
Like we were never here
But I swear there was a time I thought that it would never stop
And now I only think about you if it's raining or it's not

Song of the Day: Boygenius - Me & My Dog

What can I say?  I love all of these singers.  And dogs, by the way.  :)   Just a wonderful sad song.

boygenius: Me & My Dog

Song lyrics from Genius.com:

Me & My Dog
boygenius
Album boygenius

[Verse 1: Phoebe Bridgers]
We had a great day
Even though we forgot to eat
And you had a bad dream
Then we got no sleep
'Cause we were kissing

[Verse 2: Phoebe Bridgers]
I had a fever
Until I met you
Now you make me cool
But sometimes I still do
Something embarrassing

[Chorus: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus]
I never said I'd be all right
Just thought I could hold myself together
But I couldn't breathe, I went outside
Don't know why I thought it'd be any better
I'm fine now, it doesn't matter

I didn't wanna be this guy
I cried at your show with the teenagers
Tell your friend I'll be all right
In the morning it won't matter

I wanna be emaciated
I wanna hear one song without thinking of you
I wish I was on a spaceship
Just me and my dog and an impossible view

[Outro: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus]
I dream about it
And I wake up falling

Song of the Day: Meg Myers - Tear Me To Pieces

I love Meg Myers, so emotional and raw.  It's been a while, but happy to share some new (to me, anyway) music from her.  So powerful.  Play it loud.

Song of the Day: Rosalia - Malamente

It has been way too long since I last posted ... but allow me to share this song that caught my ear and forced me to get back on this blog to share.

I love the vibe of this song!

ROSALÍA - MALAMENTE (Cap.1: Augurio)

Lyrics, from Google:

MALAMENTE (Cap.1: Augurio)

Rosalía
Ese cristalito roto
Yo sentí cómo crujía
Antes de caerse al suelo
Ya sabía que se rompía (¡uh!)
Está parpadeando
La luz del descansillo
Una voz en la escalera
Alguien cruzando el pasillo
Malamente (eso es) (así sí)
Malamente (tra, tra)
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal (mira)
Malamente (toma que toma) ('amonó)
Malamente (eso es) (¡'illo!)
Malamente
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal
Malamente (¡uh!)
Se ha puesto la noche rara
Han salí'o luna y estrellas
Me lo dijo esa gitana (¿qué?)
Mejor no salir a verla (no)
Malamente
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal
Malamente
Aunque no esté bonita
La noche, ¡Undivé!
Voy a salir pa' la calle
En la manita los aros brillando
En mi piel los corales
Me proteja y me salve
Me ilumine y me guarde
Malamente
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal (¡'illo!)
Malamente (Toma que toma)
Malamente (¡'illo!)
Malamente (tra, tra)
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal ('amonó)
Malamente (Toma que toma) ('amonó)
Malamente (eso es)
¡'Illo!
Malamente
Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal
Malamente

Lyrics, from Translatelyrics.net:
https://www.translatelyrics.net/en/rosalia/malamente/44570/

Malamente by Rosalia (english translation)

That broken crystallite
I felt like crunching
before falling to the ground
I already knew that it was breaking

It is blinking
the light of the landing
that a voice from the staircase
someone crossed my corridor

Badly, (well, yes) badly
track track bad, very bad, very bad, very bad
look, badly, (take that it takes) badly
badly, badly, very badly very bad very badly
badly

It has been
put on the weird night
moon and stars have come out
that gypsy told me
(What?) Better not go out and see her (no)

I'm dreaming that I'm walking
by a bridge that gives sidewalk
The more I want to cross it
more moves and wobbles

Badly, (well, yes) badly
track track bad, very bad, very bad, very bad
look, badly, (take that it takes) badly
badly, badly, very badly very bad very badly
badly

Although not this pretty
do not forget
I'm going out for the street, the pretty
the hoops shining on my skin

The corals
protect me, save me
Illuminate keep me
and ahead, I will not lose
not a minute to think again

Badly, (well, yes) badly
track track bad, very bad, very bad, very bad
look, badly, (take that it takes) badly
badly, badly, very badly very bad very badly
badly ...

Song of the Day: Phosphorescent - C’est La Vie No. 2

And here is a sad song that moves me, deeply.  That's life.  I love this band, because they capture the essence of a feeling so perfectly.

Phosphorescent - C’est La Vie No. 2 (Official Audio)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXmRrUbuhZA

Lyrics from AZLyrics.com:
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/phosphorescent/cestlavieno2.html

Phosphorescent
"C'est La Vie No.2"

I wrote all night
Like the fire of my words
Could burn a hole up to heaven
I don't write all night burning holes
Up to heaven no more

I stood out in the rain
Like the rain might come
And wash my eyes clean
I don't stand out in the rain
To have my eyes washed clean no more

C'est la vie she says
But I don't know what she means
I say "Love, easy, hey come to me"
C'est la vie she says
But I don't know what that means
I say alright, well
C'est la vie

I stood out in the night
In an empty field and I called your name
I don't stand out all night in empty fields
And call your name no more

I waited for days
For your voice to answer to me
I don't wait up for days
For your voice to answer to me no more

C'est la vie they say
But I don't know what they mean
I say love's easy if you let it be
C'est la vie they say
But I don't know what that means
I say alright, well
C'est la vie
I say alright, honey
C'est la vie
Ain't that just how it goes, honey
C'est la vie

Song of the Day: Phosphorescent - Song For Zula

Here's an old song that I dearly love.  I was reminded of this band because they just released some new stuff.  More about that tomorrow.  :)

Does this song say that he is hardened by his experiences in love?  Or is he defiant and unbowed?  I'm not quite sure.  Either way, enjoy.

Phosphorescent - "Song for Zula" (Official Audio)

From AZLyrics.com:

Phosphorescent
"Song For Zula"

Some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a fading thing
Just as fickle as a feather in a stream
See, honey, I saw love. You see, it came to me
It put its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing

See, the cage, it called. I said, "Come on in"
I will not open myself up this way again
Nor lay my face to the soil, nor my teeth to the sand
I will not lay like this for days now upon end
You will not see me fall, nor see me struggle to stand
To be acknowledge by some touch from his gnarled hands
You see, the cage, it called. I said, "Come on in"
I will not open myself up this way again

You see, the moon is bright in that treetop night
I see the shadows that we cast in the cold, clean light
My feet are gold. My heart is white
And we race out on the desert plains all night
See, honey, I am not some broken thing
I do not lay here in the dark waiting for thee
No my heart is gold. My feet are light
And I am racing out on the desert plains all night

So some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a caging thing
Just a killer come to call from some awful dream
O and all you folks, you come to see
You just stand there in the glass looking at me
But my heart is wild. And my bones are steam
And I could kill you with my bare hands if I was free

Song of the Day: Ruston Kelly - Faceplant

I can't completely relate to this song, the details anyway (not into pills or anything like that) ... but I think we all can relate to the vibe.  At least I can.  Either way, it's a beautiful song in my opinion.  And it brings up a lot of memories, good and bad.

Ruston Kelly - Faceplant

Lyrics, from Genius.com

Faceplant
Ruston Kelly
Produced by Jarrad K & Ruston Kelly
Album Dying Star

[Verse 1]
I took too many pills again
I took too many pills again
Blacked out for a week didn’t eat, didn’t sleep
Came to, hit it all again
She’s probably gonna be pissed
She’s probably gonna be pissed
Throw my shit in the yard and key my car
If I show up to her house like this

[Chorus]
Oh, it was a dark December
Not even angels came around
I was too stoned to remember
Come too far to turn back now
Come too far to turn back now

[Verse 2]
Feel like I’m gonna fall down
I feel like I’m gonna fall down
But I was born and raised in an earthquake state
So I’m better on shaky ground
What the hell am I gonna do now?
The hell am I gonna do now?
Got a half lit smoke good, God I’m broke
But I gotta make it back to Germantown

[Chorus]
Woah, it was a dark December
Not even angels came around
I was too stoned to remember
Come too far to turn back now
Come too far to turn back now

[Verse 3]
Baby won’t you take me back?
Baby won’t you take me back?
It ain’t like I’m trickin’ on the corner for crack
Baby won’t you take me back?

[Chorus]
Oh, it was a dark December
In the city of angels, I was coming down
I was too stoned to remember
Come too far to turn back now
Come too far to turn back now

Song of the Day: Emeli Sandé - Somebody

Saving the best for last, in this group of songs that I've recently posted.  Heard this song on the plane, too, and it blew me away.  I listened and listened and listened.

We all want to feel like we're somebody, but this song really expresses it perfectly.

Final silly point: I love the pauses in the studio version of the song.  Such a perfect way to emphasize what she's singing.  I hope they are intentional, and not just a placeholder so she can fill in other words during concerts.

I have several versions of this song, all of them wonderful to listen to, in my opinion.

Song lyrics from AZLyrics.com:
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/emelisand/somebody.html

"Somebody"

I swear there's something different
In this cigarette
Helpin' us get lifted
Helpin' us forget
I swear there's something extra
Runnin' in our blood

We're in a hatchback party with the music turned up
Got my head out the window throwing two fingers up

Like I'm somebody
As if I'm really somebody
Tonight I am a big fucking deal
Tonight I just know how it might feel
To be somebody
Like I'm really somebody
Tonight I am a big fucking deal
Tonight I just know how it might feel

Runnin' from the city
Up the motorway
You know you can't have me
But you kiss me anyway
They can come and get us
This time we won't run

And I say a little prayer that the morning never comes
And I'm screaming over here from the top of my lungs

I am somebody
As if I'm really somebody
Tonight I am a big fucking deal
Tonight I know just how it might feel
To be somebody
Like I'm really somebody
Tonight I am a big fucking deal
Tonight I know just how it might feel
To be somebody
As if I'm really somebody

Tonight
Tonight
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah
I am somebody
I'm really, really somebody
I'm tellin' you, I'm somebody
I swear to God, I'm somebody

Song of the Day: Ella Mai - Naked

I didn't even know who Ella Mai was until I was randomly sampling music on an airplane audio system during a trans-Atlantic flight.  Wow, you never know where you'll find great music.

I love the raw emotion of this song.  The pure desire to be accepted fully for who you are.  Naked in every sense.  At least that's how I hear the song.

Ella Mai - Naked

Song lyrics from AZLyrics.com:

"Naked"

Take away the big shirts, the tattoos, the sweatpants and Vans
Okay, I don't wear no makeup, no purse in my hands
My resting bitch face is mistaken for the mean girl
But what if I told you
There's nothing I want more in this world

Than somebody who loves me naked
Someone who never asks for love
But knows how to take it
Are you that somebody
Who sees a wall and breaks it
Are you ready to fight just to see what's lost behind my flaws
Can you love me naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked
Ooooooh yeah yeah

Might be a bitch in the morning so catch me at night time
Some of my friends think I'm moody but I think I'm just fine
I could be pissed but I'll act like I'm not
I really remember when I say I forgot
No matter how hard I try
To run away from love at the end of the night

I need somebody who loves me naked
Someone who never asks for love
But knows how to take it
Are you that somebody
Who sees the wall and breaks it
Are you ready to fight just to see what's lost behind my flaws
Can you love me naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked

I need someone who loves me when I wake up
Who thinks I'm beautiful when I'm looking fucked up
I want that perfect love, am I asking too much
Someone who shoots for the stars, know when
I think I'm not even good enough

I need somebody who loves me naked
(Who loves me naked)
Someone who never asks for love
But knows how to take it
(Knows how to take it)
Are you that somebody
Who sees the wall and breaks it
Are you ready to fight just to see what's lost behind my flaws
Can you love me naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah
Naked

Song of the Day: Lauv - Superhero

I've posted a song or two from Lauv before (I think, maybe I haven't).  This is another that caught my ear.  And the video is really cool, too, in my opinion.

Lauv - Superhero [Official Video]

I kind of love this line in the song:
She did things to me that no one else could and
I miss that

Lyrics from AZLyrics.com:
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/lauv/superhero.html

"Superhero"

I met a superhero
I lost her
I want her back
She did things to me that no one else could and
I miss that

Ohhh
Don't wanna talk about it
Ohhh
I was so wrong about it
Ohhh
Can't do a thing about it now
Now

Cause they say if you love her let her go (go)
And they say if it's meant to be you'll know
Know

I met a superhero
I lost her
I want her back
She did things to me that no one else could and
I miss that
Yeah

I met a superhero
I lost her
I want her back
She did things to me that no one else could and
I miss that
I miss that

I miss that
I miss that
I miss that
I miss that

Ohhh
Don't wanna talk about it
Ohhh
I was so wrong about it
Ohhh
Can't do a thing about it now
Now

Ohhh
Don't wanna talk about it
Ohhh
I was so wrong about it
Ohhh
Can't do a thing about it now
Now

And they say if it's meant to be you'll know
I met a superhero
I lost her
I want her back
She did things to me that no one else could
And damn, I miss that

Song of the Day: Lord Huron - The Night We Met

Another sad song about things slipping away.  Why is it so hard to make that initial magic last?

Song lyrics from AZLyrics.com:
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/lordhuron/thenightwemet.html

"The Night We Met"

I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met

And then I can tell myself
What the hell I'm supposed to do
And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you

I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do, haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met

When the night was full of terror
And your eyes were filled with tears
When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met

I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do, haunted by the ghost of you
Take me back to the night we met

Song of the Day: Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer - The Color Of A Cloudy Day

Continuing with another great song.

Sometimes you feel something so precious slipping away.  You know the feeling.  So do I.  This song captures this.  Beautiful and sad.

The Color of a Cloudy Day
Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer

Gray
Gray
The color of a cloudy day
On the wind I heard you call my name
On the wind I heard you call my name
On the wind I heard you call my name
On the wind I heard you

Gone, and everything I did wrong, it don't add up to this
Lost, and I measure the cost in years without a kiss
Entire lives I missed

Red
Red
And I thought those old questions were dead
Every night I saw you close your eyes
Every night I saw you close your eyes
Every night I saw you close your eyes
Every night I saw you

Deep
Deep
I used to visit you in my sleep
Now I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you in my dreams

I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you in my dreams
I can never find you

Song of the Day: Riley Pearce - Brave

I heard a bunch of great music lately, so I'll post a few songs in a row here.  Feels good to have some more great content.  :)

Let's start with this one.  The lyrics are so beautiful.  I think we all feel like this sometimes.  It would be nice to have someone by our side when we feel like this--but that is itself scary.  We dance.  We grow close, we fade away.  But we need to be brave.

Riley Pearce - Brave

Lyrics :

Are you scared? because I am too
This fear in my head has been there for too long
We sleep now with the lights on
Shadows make shapes in the light
And I don't know what they might be

Are you cold? because I am too
So cover your toes with a jacket,
and your bones with a blanket, I will.
She tells me that I'll be alright
For a second it feels like I believe her, 'cause
I forgot the way that I felt

I'm just trying to be brave
Ooooooh Oooooooh
I'm just trying to be brave
Ooooooh Oooooooh
It's the body of water that splits us right down the middle
I'll be coming back for you

Are you lost because I am too
Directions mean nothing in the dark when you don't know where you stand
The maps gone so are our footprints too
To get home now will take something that I'm not sure if I have left.

Oh, I'm just trying to be brave
Ooooooh Oooooooh
I'm just trying to be brave
Ooooooh Oooooooh
It's the body of water that splits us right down the middle
I'll be coming back for you
I'll be coming back for you
I'll be coming back for you
I'll be coming back for you

Song of the Day: Youth - Daughter

I love the tenderness and raw emotion of this song.  The lyrics are brilliant as well.  I think it's better to feel sad--something, anything--rather than nothing.  This song gives voice to some of those feelings.

Youth - Daughter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEpMj-tqixs

Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/daughter/youth.html

Daughter Lyrics
"Youth"

Shadows settle on the place, that you left.
Our minds are troubled by the emptiness.
Destroy the middle, it's a waste of time.
From the perfect start to the finish line.

And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones.
'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs.
Setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong
The lovers that went wrong.

We are the reckless,
We are the wild youth
Chasing visions of our futures
One day we'll reveal the truth
That one will die before he gets there.

And if you're still bleeding, you're the lucky ones.
'Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone.
We're setting fire to our insides for fun.
Collecting pictures from a flood that wrecked our home,
It was a flood that wrecked this home.

And you caused it,
And you caused it,
And you caused it

Well I've lost it all, I'm just a silhouette,
A lifeless face that you'll soon forget,
My eyes are damp from the words you left,
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.

And if you're in love, then you are the lucky one,
'Cause most of us are bitter over someone.
Setting fire to our insides for fun,
To distract our hearts from ever missing them.
But I'm forever missing him.

And you caused it,
And you caused it,
And you caused it

Song of the Day: Damien Rice - Older Chests

Such a soft, beautiful, thoughtful song.  I could play it over and over and over.  And I am.

Damien Rice - Older Chests (Album O)

Song lyrics from AZLyrics.com:

"Older Chests"

Older chests reveal themselves
Like a crack in a wall
Starting small, and grow in time
And we always seem to need the help
Of someone else
To mend that shelf
Too many books
Read me your favourite line

Papa went to other lands
And he found someone who understands
The ticking, and the western man's need to cry
He came back the other day, you know
Some things in life may change
And some things
They stay the same

Like time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

Older gents sit on the fence
With their cap in hand
Looking grand
They watch their city change
Children scream, or so it seems,
Louder than before
Out of doors, and into stores with bigger names
Mama tried to wash their faces
But these kids they lost their graces
And daddy lost at the races too many times

She broke down the other day, yeah you know
Some things in life may change
But some things they stay the same

Like time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time
Time, there's always time
On my mind
Pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

What shirt should I wear?

Slightly delayed post, but better late than never.  About a week ago, I noticed that there were two NHL games on (and this happened several times, based on the schedule) where I had free shirts from all the teams involved.  Two were given to me at the door, two were nabbed when they threw shirts into the crowd.  You can tell that they're free shirts, look at the backs.  Almost all of them have sponsors on them!  For what it's worth, I'm counting my old Atlanta Thrashers shirts as Winnipeg Jets shirts!   :)

So, I asked, which shirt do I wear?

First reaction I got when I posted this on social media was from a buddy in Ireland.  He said, "For a second there I thought the yellow one said 'Let's go penis.'"  Of course he did.

Also got a comment for a buddy at the gym who knows me all too well: "Fake question because we know it's too hot to wear a shirt."  Touche, Harry.

Turns out I made the right choice.  I wore my Thrashers shirt, and the Jets kicked ass that night (May 5, 2018).  Then later, May 11 I believe, I wore my Capitals shirt and they took Game 1 on the road in Tampa.

As I type this, I'm not wearing my Capitals shirt and the Lightning are winning.  Hey, I do want a longer series, and more hockey.

So at this point, I think it's pretty clear.  If Tampa or Las Vegas want to win the Cup, they need to send me a shirt!!!

Song of the Day: Mariana and the Diamonds - True Colors (Cyndi Lauper cover)

You know how much I love this song.  And I'm fascinated by songs that I seem to love regardless of who sings them.  Except this song was not sung by just anyone.  It was sung by Marina.  Who, as you, my seven* readers, know, is one of my favorites.  Thanks to YouTube (which seems to know exactly what I like), I found this song.

First of all, here is my past post about this same song.
Song of the Day: Eva Cassidy - True Colors

And now the new version:
MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS | "TRUE COLOURS" (CYNDI LAUPER COVER)

Another challenge with this blog post was to find a picture of Marina that I haven't used before, because I've posted so many songs by here.  Yeah, there a lot of pictures out there, but I mean a picture I would be happy to put on my blog.  Hopefully I haven't used this one before.

Song of the Day: Girlpool - Picturesong

I love the vibe of this song.  Not sure what to make of the lyrics, but it doesn't matter.

Girlpool - Picturesong Lyrics
Artist: Girlpool
Album: Picturesong

You're a god charade I'll let you down
like a noise complaint I know my cover's blown
Fetish and fury tax worshiping everything I lack is dumb
Invention strung

Into empty space where hollow shapes will misbehave
What does holy want?
I'll be that Picturesong
Make me into a hundred words hide me in bathroom walls

It's a spastic shame that hollow shapes will break the frame
What does holy want?
A wind up Picturesong
A muse to sing a dozen words a silence for the wall

Song of the Day: The Cranberries - No Need To Argue

You're heard the news, no doubt, that Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries lead singer) unexpectedly passed away recently at the too-young age of 46.  That caused me to dig out a bunch of Cranberries albums I have, and reminisce.  And share with my daughters (who don't fully understand why I'm sad when I hear news like this, and Prince, and Tom Petty, etc.).

I had the pleasure of hearing the Cranberries in concert a LONG time ago, at the Riverside theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Looking it up...

Yep, there it is.  November 18, 1994.  I feel old.  But happy to have heard them at their peak.

You've heard the popular songs (Linger, Zombie).  But this song really conveyed her tenderness, and also the power of her voice.  Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.   :(

Cranberries - No need to argue, Dreaming my dreams (Later with Jools Holland)

And a bonus song, as well, also one of my favorites.

Rest in peace, Dolores.
