Anyway, I wrote this lengthy blog post in her honor, so she remembers her first concert with me. Ah, I have to be honest, that's bullshit. I wrote it so that I would remember it, every detail. I hope there are many more like it.
So awesome to share this with her, to have our tastes overlap like this! So happy to see her growing up so fast (both daughters actually). Great night. Even before the concert started she was texting her sister about how awesome it was.
They didn't have t-shirts for sale, the one time I would have bought one! Sad because I was planning to buy one for my daughter. So I grabbed a poster off the wall (after asking a bouncer if it was okay, he said yes) as a souvenir. Fabulous concert.
Opening act started at 8:15p, not 7p. Whoever he was. We arrived at 7:40p or so. Good thing we brought earplugs. Way too much bass in most songs. Pretty good, though--Erik Hassle was his name.
Concert was at The Masquerade, in Atlanta. Old building, lots of character you might say. My daughter loved all the cool graffiti in the women's bathroom, she said. Tickets said it would be in Hell, but it was held in Heaven, the larger room upstairs. They must have sold more tickets than expected.
Hassle was done at 8:45. Broods started at 9:15.
Side note: There were a LOT of lesbians there. And some of them were REALLY into each other. I had no idea that Broods appealed to that audience. Then again, my co-workers accuse me of liking "dyke music." Maybe they're right...
Song list is below. And here is a Broods playlist. The first songs are in order, from the concert. As time goes on I suspect I'll add more songs.
Broods (TMB playlist)
1. Never Gonna Change
Broods - Never Gonna Change
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/nevergonnachange.html
And I hate that I can't say your name
Without feeling like I'm part of the blame
And it's never gonna feel quite the same
But it's never gonna change
2. Everytime
Broods - Everytime
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/everytime.html
You told me you could change your ways
You collecting scars but you look away
You promised me you could make it better
You told me it won't be the same
But your eyes stay shut and my screams fall faint
I only wanted to make it better
Make it better
Make you better
And it breaks my heart
And it breaks my heart...
3. Sleep Baby Sleep
Broods - Sleep Baby Sleep
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/sleepbabysleep.html
I could be the one to give you all I am
With a gentle touch and a foolish love
You could be the one to carry all my troubles away
With the words you say, all I need to hear so
4. Killing You
Broods - Killing You
This is one of the songs that my daughter recognized and I didn't. :)
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/killingyou.html
White sheets, three weeks never where you are
Too bad, nomadic is who we are
White sheets, three weeks
Never where you are
Never where you are
But I can make up for it on the weekend
Oh, I can make up for it on the weekend
5. Taking You There
Broods - Taking You There
This song was fabulous, just great. Maybe the best performed song of the night, although Four Walls and LAF were also damn good. But this song was most improved hearing it live, versus just listening to a recording.
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/takingyouthere.html
If I lose my way and forget what I need
Just remind me now of what you give to me
If you hold my hand and take me where you go
I'll show you the sight that no one knows
I'm taking you there
I'm taking you there
If scars are for the living
Then I could be forgiven
And everything you need
I could give you
If scars are for the living
Then I could be forgiven
And everything you have
I take too
Tell me you care
I'm taking you there
Tell me you care
(If scars are for the living, I could be forgiven)
I'm taking you there
(If scars are for the living, I could be forgiven)
Tell me you care
6. Evergreen
Broods - Evergreen
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/evergreen.html
Since we found out that we're invincible
We've been living in a dream world
Since we decided to be infinite
There's no ending and there's no fear
I was filled
You made my bones still
Your eyes well with tears
We're alive, my dear
7. Medicine
Broods - Medicine
I had a lot of trouble finding this song. In the original draft of this blog post I called this "[unknown song]" and didn't have any links for it. I figured I might find out years later. Or maybe I'd never figure it out.
Credit goes to YouTube for finding it for me. Nowadays, when you play a song on YouTube, it keeps playing song after song, songs that it thinks you'd like based on the first song you chose. Lo and behold, this song popped up. I was doing some other work, but in the back of my mind I said, HEY, THAT'S MY MISSING SONG!
In that original draft of the blog post I did say this: "Someday I'll come back and edit this post with the actual song. :)" Turns out that was only an hour or two later.
Now, don't laugh, but these are the notes I took during the concert. I said, "Lyrics included these, if I took notes well. Don't laugh later if I completely misheard what Georgia said."
Song title Mildred __?__Not even close, right? Here are the proper lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
I know you, I know you.
All you have to do, all you have to do, is survive.
You'll be fine, you'll be fine.
I've had a hard day, too, I can't forget you.
Take you to the other side
Heart shaped hole in ...
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/medicine.html
When I've got nothing left to lose
I wonder what I'll find
Without the simple sigh of you
To give me peace in mind
But you're my storm
I can't compete
And I'm forlorn
I'm moving only on your breeze
And I-I-I-I-I-I-I'll never be free
And I-I-I-I-I-I-I'll never be free
8. Four Walls
Broods - Four Walls (Live With Lyrics)
Insanely good. For the link, I prefer the live version to the album version.
I also took this crappy video. :)
Broods - Four Walls
Oh, and here's a great cell phone picture:
Georgia (lead singer) said that this song is all about her love life. But she trusted us, the audience, to keep it between us. :)
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/fourwalls.html
I wanna make you feel how I feel when I'm listening to love songs
I wanna take you to the peak of everything that you are
You're everything I need tonight
And I'm trying hard to make you want me
But I don't wanna try too hard
I was thinking you got what you came for
But you're here now
9. Bridges
Broods - Bridges
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/bridges.html
If any word that I said
Could have made you forget
I'd have given you them all
But it was all in your head
And we're burning all the bridges now
Watching them go up in flames
No way to build them up again
10. Sober
Broods - Sober
They said this one was not on the new album, Evergreen, but they said they like playing it live!
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/sober.html
It was the greatest place I've ever been
And it was right in front of me
You carried me back home again
Where you became it all for me
Still and silent
One gets used to it
Being idle
But not you and me
11. Pretty Thing
Broods - Pretty Thing
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/prettything.html
The only thing that's keeping me from going wrong
Is you keeping me
(Lost in love, lost in love, lost in love...)
And the only thing that's holding me from going wrong
Is you holding me
12. LAF
Broods - L.A.F
You, my seven readers*, remember what LAF stand for, don't you? It's on a previous blog post. :)
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/laf.html
And I'll never get this feeling out of my head
And I'll never wanna be the one you forget
Blood hits the pavement from your eyes
Under the streetlights, but I've got you
Your restless limbs are goin' wild
They're comin' for mine cause they've got you
13. Happy Birthday
Apparently, it was Georgia and Caleb Nott's mother's birthday the night of the concert. Or maybe it was tomorrow, but since their mother was in New Zealand it was already tomorrow. I don't know, it was very confusing, at least in part because I think they had been on tour so long they didn't know what the date was, or what the date was in New Zealand. I say that because at the beginning of the concert Georgia asked what day of the week it was, because when they're on the road they lose track.
Anyway, their mother's birthday was today or tomorrow, and they wanted to sing Happy Birthday to her. So they took a cell phone video of them, and all of us, singing Happy Birthday, so they could send it to her! Very cool.
14. Coattails
Broods - Coattails
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/coattails.html
For a moment I feel I'm losing it
Throw my temper down and bury it
The earth will reach the sky
If you talk me out of my needs
And stitch me up at the seams
And I could lever my dreams
So we'll ride the coattails to the finish line
I don't hear those church bells chime anymore
Cause I'm in love with this
So we'll ride the coattails to the finish line
I don't hear those church bells chime anymore
Cause I'm in love with this
Then they were done at 10:20? Or were they? Encore? Yes!
15. Superstar
Broods - Superstar
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/superstar.html
I've been waiting for the sun to rise where you are
So I can tell you you're a superstar
I've been waiting for our words to be in line
So I can let you know that baby, you're the rest of my life
I've been dreaming of a future that looks like our past
And they'll admire that we made it last
So I've been waiting for the sun to rise where you are
So I can tell you you're a superstar
You know I think about it all the time
You would run away with me
And we'd go looking for a place to hide
And you would be at home with me
You would be at home with me
We would be at home
16. Mother and Father
Broods - Mother & Father
Heavy percussion on this one
Lyrics, from AZLyrics.com:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/broods/motherfather.html
The nights are getting shorter
I don’t know where they go
And I am getting older
And it's starting to show
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
I don’t want to wake up lonely
I don’t want to just be fine
I don't want to keep on hoping
Forget what I have in mind
Forget what I have in mind
I remember the time when a kiss on the hand was enough
Cause we knew we were free
And we knew what it meant to be loved
But ever since I left my father
It’s much harder to know
How to live my own life here
When all I need is home
They got done at about 10:30p.
Afterwards I wondered about lip syncing. They sounded awfully good for The Masquerade. Lots of the background vocals were on tape, not sure how much of the main singing was also on tape.
Finally, here is a picture of my beautiful daughter, in the darkness of Heaven, at the Masquerade. I thought about playing with the image, and I did a little. Ultimately, I decided to leave it exactly as I took it. To capture the exact mood of the venue and the moment. So I never forget, ever. I love you, Sweetie.
