ReplyDeleteAlthough I know he said it in a good-natured way, I couldn't help but take the bait. Two points:
1. I reject the notion that energy consumed in data centers is a bad thing. (I did feel this way before I took my present job, by the way.) While some data center power use is new consumption (stuff we didn't do before: Facebook, YouTube, etc.), I think that more of it displaces higher energy consumption activities. For example, we comparison shop online rather than drive from store to store. We send e-mail rather than write letters that have to be flown and trucked across the country.
