Exercise

Saw this article and I totally agree.

"6 Hard Truths About Exercising"

As I get older (sigh) I find I need to exercise more, to keep playing hockey at a decent level.  I've found all the things mentioned in the article to be true.  I joined a gym, and go at my usual time whenever I'm in town.  They track our progress.  They make us do the exercises/movements/lifting mentioned in the article, and many more.  We repeat certain workouts every few months, to see if we're making progress.  We learn new skills along the way (handstand holds against the walls, kipping pull-ups!).  I'm not sure that we start slow, but we do work a lot of form with light weight when people first join the gym, which is a way of starting slow I suppose.

Lots of different types of workouts out there, I wouldn't presume to preach about which is best.  Crossfit works for me, to keep me in shape for hockey.  But you need to find what works for you.

Schedule it.  Do it, whatever you choose to do.

"Winter"

I should know
Who I am by now
I walk
The record stands somehow
Thinking of winter

Your name is the splinter inside me
While I wait

And I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you
But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wait

The walk has all been cleared by now
Your voice is all I hear somehow
Calling out Winter

Your voice is the splinter inside me
While I wait

I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you
But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wait

I could have lost myself
In rough blue waters in your eyes
And I miss you still

I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you
But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wait

Quote of the Day: Stanley Kubrick, on Meaning and Fulfillment

“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent; but if we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death — however mutable man may be able to make them — our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”
- Stanley Kubrick, interviewed by Eric Nordern, Playboy (September 1968)

"However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light."  So true.

Song of the Day: Marina and the Diamonds - Happy

This is a song from one of my favorite artists.  It touches me deeply, for reasons too personal to post.  Enjoy.  And may you, my seven readers*, also find a way to be happy.

Lyrics to Happy

Couldn't relax, couldn't sit back
And let the sunlight, in my lap
I sang a hymn
To bring me peace
And then it came, a melody

It felt so sweet
It felt so strong
It made me feel like
I belonged
And all the sadness inside me
Melted away
Like I was free

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be
Happy, happy

Don't go out
Much at all
I've never been
The type to call
I realize to be happy
Maybe I need
A little company

So now you know
You know it all
That I've been
Desperately alone
I haven't found the one for me
But I believe in divinity

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be
Happy, happy
I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy

From the concrete to the coast
I was looking for a holy ghost
Like the land joining the sea
Happiness it followed me
I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy

Building monuments to waste

Ever wonder if our government is too big?  Don't.  There is plenty of proof that it is.

From the Washington Post:
"NASA’s $349 million monument to its drift"

I don't even know what to say.  What a fucking joke.
